John T. Carlo, MD, MS
Dr. Carlo serves as the program director for CIDRAP's Chemical and Biological Early Detection System (BioWatch). Prior to this position, Dr. Carlo served as the medical director and health authority for Dallas County Health & Human Services from 2006 to 2010. He served as the chief epidemiologist at Dallas County Health & Human Services from 2004 to 2006. In addition to overseeing the clinical services of the department, he was responsible for coordinating the response to public health emergencies and disasters, which included during his tenure the 2009-10 novel H1N1 influenza pandemic and four large shelter/mass care events occurring after Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Gustav.
Dr. Carlo is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Surgery and Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and an adjunct faculty member of the University of Texas School of Public Health. He is also a 2008 graduate of the US Department of Homeland Security's Executive Leadership Program operated by the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
Dr. Carlo received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and completed his residency in general surgery. He also has a master's degree in biomedical engineering from Tulane University. Dr. Carlo is currently on the board of directors for the Dallas County Medical Society, and serves on the Committee for Public Health and Scientific Affairs for the Texas Medical Association.
